What do Maya Angelou, Edgar Allen Poe, J.K. Rowling and William Shakespeare have in common?
They are among the favorites of Rocky Point Middle School students and teachers alike who participated in the school’s annual Poetry Slam on Feb. 15.
The encouraging literary event brought together 12 student readers, several teachers, Principal Meyers and school librarian Ms. O’Connell to read or recite from memory current and historic works of literature in front of an audience of dozens of their peers and teachers in the school library.
Organized by Ms. O’Connell and English teacher Mrs. Schumacher, the event inspires students to speak publicly, share their likes of particular authors and poets, and to engage in self-expression with original works of art.
Great job to all the student readers: Gabrielle Alesi, Jonathan Alesi, Savannah Bullock, Jayna Cohn, Valentina Gandiosi, Samantha Klunder, Gabriela Madrid, Meridith Schmidt, Gabrielle Schnittman, Jiselle Sinclair, Emma Villafane-Kaplan and Addison Zahra and all the students who supported their peers. A special thanks to teacher-readers Mrs. Scott, Mr. Settepani and Mr. Tsavos for sharing some of their favorites as well.
