Love and song were in the air on Valentine’s Day as the students of the Rocky Point Middle School grades 6-8 choirs participated in the third annual “Singing Valentines” event. This event provided students and faculty the opportunity to gift a “Singing Valentine” to a friend or loved one within the school. When someone received a Singing Valentine, the chorus students would request their presence during their lunch period where they would serenade the recipient with a brief love or friendship song and present them with a small gift. Grade 8 chorus students volunteered their lunch time during the week prior to Valentine’s Day to sell the singing valentines to the school community. Gift givers had the option of selecting the songs “Count on Me,” “My Girl,” or “L-O-V-E” for the choirs to perform to their friend or loved one in addition to sending them a rubber bracelet or artificial rose.

The Singing Valentines began as an effort to help spread kindness on Valentine’s Day and as an initiative to help grow the chorus community in the Middle School. Since the inception of the event, the Middle School choir program has more than doubled in size. Students and staff alike enjoyed hearing the performances throughout the day, as the chorus students did their part in spreading love, joy and kindness.

Rocky Point Middle School Chorus Director Emily Farrell said, “I am very proud of the talent and dedication that the Middle School singers displayed on Valentine’s Day. It is not easy to sing in front of your peers, FOR your peers. I commend each and every participant for their courage. Their songs spread lots of smiles and joy.”

A joint message from Rocky Point Music Department Chairpersons Mr. Craig Knapp and Ms. Amy Schecher read, “Congratulations to the Middle School chorus students for spreading joy, love and kindness on Valentine’s Day. We are very thankful and proud of the work that Mrs. Farrell is doing to provide such meaningful, interactive and visible musical experiences for the students at the Middle School! It was her passion and initiative to create this event three years ago, and we are happy to see that it continues to grow each year. This requires a tremendous amount of work to not only prepare the students to sing, but also keep track of, organize and schedule all of the Singing Valentine requests. Thank you, Mrs. Farrell and the Middle School Chorus students, for doing your part to help make the Middle School a place that provides positive experiences while promoting acceptance and kindness.

Congratulations and thank you all for making a difference in the lives of the Middle School students and staff members. We would also like to thank Rocky Point Middle School administrators Mrs. Meyers and Dr. Herbert for supporting this event.”
