JAE’s annual read-a-thon to support the Madagascar Ankizy Fund took place recently, and the Rocky Point community contributed to its success. A total of $2,880 was raised – with a $600 donation from the Rocky Point High School math club and adviser Janece Alfredson.
“We are so proud of our students,” fourth grade teacher Allison Licata said of the funds that will help cover teacher salaries; training in basic health, hygiene and nutrition; maintenance of clean water wells and distribution of mosquito nets, among other expenses.
Throughout the initiative, students were encouraged to secure sponsors to pledge funds for each page of a book read. This tradition began more than 20 years ago and, since its inception, students have raised enough money to build a school in Madagascar. In 2008, The Rocky Point School was inaugurated.
Founded in 1998 by paleontologist Dr. David Krause, the Madagascar Ankizy Fund’s mission is to provide education and health care to children living in remote areas of the island.
