Message from Rocky Point HS for Parents/Guardians of Grade 12 Students--Right To Refuse Regents Exemptions

April 19, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 12 Students,

It has been determined that your child is eligible to graduate in June 2021 because he or she received one or more Regents exemptions due to the COVID-19 health crisis. If you would like to accept these exemptions and have your child graduate on June 25, 2021 with his/her class, no action is necessary.

The purpose of this notification is to inform Rocky Point Union Free School District parents or persons in parental relation that they have the option to explicitly decline the exemptions to the assessment requirements for graduation. Specifically, if the parent or person in parental relation explicitly declines the exemption of a Regents Examination, a NYSED Approved Alternative examination, a Pathway examination or a waiver of unfinished Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential requirements, applied to his or her child, a diploma will not be conferred on such student at this time.

You may decline one or more of the exemptions that your child is eligible for by contacting your child’s guidance counselor no later than June 25, 2021. Your child’s guidance counselor will provide you with the necessary form to be completed.

Please note:

• If you choose to decline the Regents Examination Waiver, your child will no longer be eligible for the June 25, 2021 graduation and will be retained as a 12th grader in September 2021.
• Your child will not be eligible to graduate until he or she meets all the graduation assessment requirements, including those that were previously eligible for an exemption and the parent declined such exemption.
• Your decision to decline the Regents exemption is irrevocable.
• Your child will remain eligible to receive a free public education until the end of the school year in which he or she attains age 21 or earns a diploma, whichever occurs first.

You are encouraged to contact your child’s guidance counselor to ask any questions related to the Regents exemption and/or discuss educational plans that may be impacted.

Except as otherwise explained herein, if your child is eligible to graduate with exemptions and you do not decline one or more of these prior to June 25, 2021, your son/daughter will be conferred their diploma or graduation credential on June 25, 2021.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Hart
Principal
Rocky Point High School
