Positive Contributions to our Environment
Students from Rocky Point High School recently joined environmental innovator Rob Vasiluth and his company, SAVE Environmental, in efforts to restore native eelgrass along Long Island’s shoreline. Using SAVE’s patented method of attaching eelgrass seeds to clams – a process that allows the clams to bury themselves and help the seeds take root – students contributed directly to revitalizing local marine habitats. Eelgrass, often called the “miracle plant,” is vital to the ecosystem, providing nursery grounds for fish and scallops, reducing erosion and storing carbon up to 35 times faster than rainforests.
This project offered our students a valuable, hands-on learning experience, allowing them to apply science and environmental studies in the field while seeing the real world impact of their work. With this environmental stewardship, our students helped protect the planet and be part of something bigger than themselves and gained a deeper understanding of marine ecology and the importance of community-driven conservation efforts.
