Science Research Honors
The Rocky Point School District hosted its 12th Annual Science Research Symposium on June 2.
The event was a celebration of the work that science research students have done throughout the year. Along with teacher Melissa Domenchello, Rocky Point Middle School and Rocky Point High School research students gathered with their families in the high school library to share their research findings. Students in the district’s honors science research course displayed their work for attendees at the event's opening with a poster session.
Several upperclassmen presented their research projects. Sophia Smyth reported on her work on antimicrobial protein treatment for wound healing. Tianna McEvoy shared the findings of her study on microplastics in Long Island oysters. Allison Keane and senior Olivia Curtin spoke about their project “Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation on the Growth of Manduca sexta” and seniors Om Patel and Zen Pinkenburg discussed their research at Brookhaven National Laboratory titled “Deep Learning sPHENIX Calorimeter Waveform Fits.” Earlier in the year, Zen and Om were recognized with an honorable mention award at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.
“We are incredibly proud of the work our science research students have done this year under the mentorship of Ms. Domenchello,” District Director of Math, Science, Technology, Business, CTE and FACS Dr. Kimberly Christian said. “Each project embodies the determination, creativity and critical thinking at the heart of scientific work. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for these young scientists.”
