STEAM Team Event Brings Hands-On Learning to Rocky Point Middle School
Nearly 40 Rocky Point middle school students and family members participated in a STEAM Team event held last Wednesday in the school library, transforming the space into a hub of creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. Participants formed eight teams and rotated through five hands-on challenges, spending 15 minutes at each station. Activities were designed to engage students in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through teamwork and critical thinking.
The challenges included:
- Straw Cantilever, where teams built a straw ledge extending off a table that could support a marble.
- Lego Zipline, which tasked teams with constructing a Lego gondola capable of safely transporting a Lego figure down a zipline.
- Ten Second Tumble, a domino run designed to last exactly 10 seconds.
- Edge of Greatness, where teams programmed a Cubelets robot to travel across a table without falling off.
- Marble Multiverse, an estimation challenge to determine how many marbles could fill a large plastic tub.
Teams circulated through the stations, jumping quickly into the challenges and collaborating to test ideas and refine their designs.
After scores were tabulated, Team No. 1 earned first place. Team members included Kristopher Citarella, Samuel Correa-Arias, Emmett Monahan, and Caleb Parisi. Stations emphasized creativity while strengthening problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. The event also encouraged meaningful family involvement in hands-on learning.
