Inclement Weather and Emergency Protocols

November 1, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians:

With the winter season rapidly approaching, it is important to remind all parents and legal guardians of our inclement weather emergency protocols. In the event of inclement weather causing an early dismissal, schools will dismiss in the same order as is customary for regular dismissal with the High School being dismissed first, followed by the Middle School, the Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School, and, lastly, the Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School.

Please review with your children the emergency procedures you have arranged in the event of a delayed opening, early dismissal, or school closure.

When weather conditions necessitate a change from the regularly scheduled school day, the following protocol will be followed:

• A review of road and weather conditions and forecasts will take place as early as possible.
• Parents will be notified of the decision to delay, dismiss early or close school, via Connect Ed telephone, text and email messages.
• Inclement weather bus stops will be utilized during any delayed opening or early dismissal due to weather. If inclement weather bus stops are used for pickup on a given morning, they will be used for afternoon drop-off also, unless parents and guardians are notified to the contrary. A list of current inclement weather stops can be accessed via the Parent Portal on eSchool. If your present bus stop is not listed, then the regular and inclement stops are the same.

As you know, weather is often unpredictable and forecasts may be inaccurate from time to time. We will always make the best decision possible based on the available weather data. However, your patience and understanding are appreciated when the forecast is unclear and our decision does not align precisely with the weather outcome.

Please ensure that your emergency contact information on file with your child’s school is up to date and accurate. This information may be updated via the Parent Portal on eSchool.

As is always the case, the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority and your cooperation and support is greatly appreciated when we are dealing with inclement weather and emergency closings/dismissals of any type. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact your child’s building principal.

Please accept my best wishes for a safe and relaxing holiday season.

Sincerely,

Scott O’Brien, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools
