After learning that 80 percent of water bottles end up in the nation’s landfills and that many in the community do not recycle on a regular basis, Rocky Point students Brianna Florio, Nikki Garguilo, Skylar Intravaia, Kelly McCauley and Alexa Titone, all members of Girl Scout Ambassador Troops 2945 and 1984, sought to make a difference.
As part of the Girl Scout badge Justice, which asks members to evaluate environmental injustices, the group launched a campaign to inspire their peers to help the environment by recycling water bottles. Teaming up with the high school’s Be a Nicer Neighbor Club, the students proposed placing recycling receptacles by the school’s cafeteria and gym and using the funds collected from the deposits to conduct activities such as cooking for the homeless or to support local charities.
The students were commended for their efforts during a recent Board of Education meeting.
