Success starts at the elementary level, and the Rocky Point School District continues to make that happen. Both FJC and JAE hosted “From Crayons to College and Careers,” a weeklong event with different themes each day to understand the importance of education and choosing a career path.
Organized by elementary guidance counselors Mrs. Jamie Adamski and Mrs. Jean Costa, the daily themes included dressing up in future career gear, wearing camouflage or patriot colors to represent military careers, pajama day to encourage big dreams, college gear to represent post-high school education and Rocky Point apparel to signify that the future starts here!
Mrs. Adamski and Mrs. Costa also advertised for “help wanted” and received dozens of replies from Rocky Point parents who sent in videos of themselves explaining their careers. From a nurse, a dance teacher, a glass artist, a policeman, a plant scientist and so much more, the students had an opportunity to view this virtual career fair and learn about the many interesting and diverse professions of Rocky Point parents.
The counselors also shared resources with classroom teachers and focused on college and career exploration in social-emotional learning classes. “We feel as though it is never too early to start connecting our students’ passions and interests to possible future goals,” Mrs. Adamski said.
