Although much is different this year for many students, one thing remains the same at JAE: students embracing a healthy lifestyle as they took part in the Kids Heart Challenge. The annual event raises funds to support the American Heart Association and is coordinated by physical education teacher Ms. Maria Amoscato. In the past, students participated in an after-school event where they jumped rope in return for monetary pledges from family and friends. This year, Ms. Amoscato created an online version, and the staff, families and greater Rocky Point community contributed more than $11,500.
Ms. Amoscato pointed to the student excitement year after year and looks forward to being together again for an in-person event. In her now 19 years of putting together the challenge, JAE has raised $184,748. “Our efforts truly make a difference,” she said.
The student with the highest fundraising amount was fourth grader Casey Stengel, who raised more than $2,000 in honor of his younger brother Chase. Another fourth grader, Leigha Blandi, was the second-highest fundraiser with more than $1,525 in donations. Great job to all of our students and staff for your efforts!
