As part of its English language arts curriculum, FJC students are learning about realistic fiction, in which stories may resemble actual occurrences and invented characters may act similarly to real-life people. First grade teacher Ms. Jennifer Meschi took a unique approach to the lesson, focused on author Mo Willems’s Knuffle Bunny book trilogy.
The drama, adventures, joys and sadness of growing up are highlighted in the series, and Ms. Meschi, who has 15 first graders whom she teaches virtually, surprised the youngsters by dressing up as a pilot. She also created a boarding pass for each student so they could all pretend to fly on Air Pigeon.
Ms. Meschi’s mini-unit on realistic fiction may well inspire creative writing and an appreciation for children’s literature among her students.
