Rocky Point High School seniors Abigail Bellport and Peter LaSalla have been named 2017 Suffolk Zone award winners by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.   

The pair was honored for being the top female and male senior physical education leaders in their school during the association’s annual awards dinner. The award criteria considered students’ leadership in physical education, scholarship, character and being a role model to their peers.

Abigail has competed on four athletic teams throughout her educational career in Rocky Point, including basketball, cross-country, field hockey, and lacrosse, and is a three-sport scholar-athlete. She is a member of Athletes Helping Athletes, Big Buddy Little Buddy, Business Honor Society, Girl Scouts, History Honor Society, Leaders Club, and the National Honor Society, and volunteers through Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, she was named an All-County athlete in cross-country and has received an athletic scholarship for lacrosse. She will be attending Molloy College to major in business this fall. 

Peter is a two-sport scholar-athlete who has served as the captain of the Rocky Point football and lacrosse teams. He is president of the varsity club and was named an All-American in lacrosse. Additionally, he is a member of the National Honor Society and History Honor Society, and gives back to the community by coaching youth football and assisting in youth lacrosse clinics and tournaments. He was named the most outstanding midfielder in Division II lacrosse and has received an athletic scholarship for lacrosse. Peter will be studying mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia this fall.
