As part of a nonfiction writing study, the first-graders in Elizabeth Filippi’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School became authors by penning informational stories about the rain forest.

Leading up to the literary project, the students learned about animals and their habitats and studied the multiple layers of the rain forest and why these layers are important. Using a mentor text as a guide, they then wrote and illustrated books about these tropical regions, including details on the weather, native animals and plants.
