Celebrating MLK

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifth-graders from Leah Cooper and Laura O'Mahoney's class celebrated the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a literacy and social studies project.

The students wrote inspirational paragraphs describing one gift that Dr. King would want for his birthday if he were still alive. They then extracted a wish from their composition, such as peace, wrote it down on a separate piece of paper and wrapped it.

Gathered around the Smart Board, which displayed a picture of Dr. King, the students took turns presenting the wishes to the class and inferring why they thought Dr. King would enjoy the gift.

The activity helped the class better understand how the past affects current and future events and the importance of why Dr. King is celebrated.
