In its proactive efforts to educate the community’s youth about the dangers of engaging in destructive behaviors, the district sought input from stakeholders this November in preparation for a Drug Free Community Forum in the spring.

During the meeting, the attendees – which included district administrators, representatives from community support organizations, elected officials and parents ¬– learned of the previous efforts the district has taken with regard to the topic. The district also shared data obtained from a student assessment survey and from focus group discussions conducted at the secondary level.

Support service providers and John Venza, vice president of adolescent services for OUTREACH, spoke about the resources they offer to those battling addiction as well as the rise in heroin and opioid use across the region. Elected officials discussed how Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven are working to combat this matter, and Suffolk County COPE Officer Steven Hughes spoke about his work.

The data shared during the planning meeting will serve as the basis for the spring community forum. All members of the community are invited to attend the Drug Free Community Forum, which will be held on Tuesday, April 5, beginning at 7 p.m., at Rocky Point High School.
