As a token of appreciation for the service and sacrifices made, Rocky Point Middle School students drafted more than 700 letters to veterans living in the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

The project, which was spearheaded by seventh-grade teacher John Mauceri, involved students in grades 6-8 and their social studies teachers. The original letters noted how the veterans were appreciated and treasured for their years of service to the country and for protecting the nation’s freedoms.

Each resident at the home received approximately two letters just before Veterans Day.

The project held a special connection for Mr. Mauceri, as his father, an engineer and cook during the Korean War, is a resident at the home. The following teachers participated in the project: Erica Alemaghides, Dawn Callahan, Grant Connelly, Darren Goldstein, Scott Guinther, Greg Havranek, John Mauceri, Dave Murphy and Danielle Skalet.
