MeschiFrank J. Carasiti Elementary School first-grade teacher Jennifer Meschi has received one of 100 grants in the national ING Unsung Heroes grant program.

As an award winner, Ms. Meschi will receive $2,000 to fund a hands-on insect research project called “Science Alive.” The project, which is tied to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, will enable three kindergarten classes to maintain ant farms and three first-grade classes to work with ladybugs. The classes will receive written materials about their insects, maintain science journals documenting their observations and utilize various technological resources to integrate the project into other areas of the curriculum.

ING Unsung Heroes grants are given to K-12 educators who employ new teaching methods and techniques to improve learning. Every year, educators submit applications describing projects they have initiated or would like to pursue. Each project is judged on its innovative method, creativity and ability to positively influence students.
