Dear Rocky Point Families,

It should go without saying, these past several months have been challenging for so many in our community and nation. Recently, that level of hurt and distress was furthered by the news surrounding the untimely and tragic death of George Floyd. The media reports on this matter can be upsetting and concerning to us as adults and we know that they can often leave our youth with questions that can be difficult to answer.

In Rocky Point, our district strives to teach students about the importance of acceptance, unity and kindness. Our strong and robust educational programs that are unitized in grades K-12 focus on the need to embrace anti-bullying behaviors, treat all people equally and be proud of one’s individuality. Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring that discrimination has no place in our schools and that all our students are empowered to help be the forces for positive change in our world. As educators, we are thankful for the strong home-to-school partnership that exists in our community – which helps to extend these messages of unity beyond the traditional walls of the classroom and transform the words in action into our daily lives.

As we work to navigate through the news and events following this tragedy, please know that our staff is here to support you and your family. Do not hesitate to reach out to our social workers, guidance counselors or building principals for resources to help guide age-appropriate conversations with your children or tips for fielding their individual questions.

In closing, please know that our district remains steadfast in our commitment to our past efforts on teaching students about acceptance, inclusion and kindness and will continue to develop new ways to enhance our past practices for when classes resume in-person.

I am confident that together, as a community, we will continue to navigate these challenging times and work to forge a path toward a brighter future.

Be well, stay safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott O’Brien, Superintendent of Schools
