Students in FJC celebrated National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday in an educational and fun way. Ms. Jennifer Meschi’s first grade class took part in a number of STEM-based activities, inspired by Dr. Seuss stories. The students created parachutes using pipe cleaners and Styrofoam cups for the story “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” They also stacked red and white cups to build towers that resembled the striped hat in “The Cat in the Hat” and used connecting cubes to create a structure that would balance inspired by “Yertle the Turtle.” They then discussed with one another and Ms. Meschi their favorite activities, recorded their findings and talked about what they could do to modify or change their structures to make them more efficient or stronger.
